Wikipedia and your Business

When it comes to promoting business online everyone instantly pictures social networking sites, blogs and YouTube but no one actually considers Wikipedia even as an option. Wikipedia is the most surfed and  famous site on internet ,its free and its status as an “authority site” is undisputable. It’s one of the most sought after site online, whose data is trusted and followed by most of the internet users. So it’s important to integrate working on Wikipedia in your social media strategy.

Wikipedia despite of all the odds of policies and settings is an important component when it comes to your business and its reputation and sales online. Though it might directly not sell your products but it will definitely lay out strong base for your company in the online market reputation which transfers offline as well.

It’s a great thing to have a page of your company on Wikipedia; it speaks great volumes about its authenticity, reputation and importance. It presents your company as good enough as featuring on Wikipedia is something of huge credibility. Plus if high rankings for a competitive keyword prove elusive, you can get Wikipedia into the top 10 with relative ease.

Hence having a team which keeps a track on the data which is being updated on Wikipedia is crucial as most people follow Wikipedia blindly and thus keeping up a good reputation online and mainly on Wikipedia is the key. Updating data from time to time helps in making the data on your Wikipedia page as valuable, notable and valid. But it’s important that your contributions are neutral and not biased towards your brand. The main reason to be active on Wikipedia is to keep wrong implications on your company at bay thus not affecting your brand in any way. Keep your page original referring positive and negative points both, but keep it spam free and don’t add photos that are not Creative Commons licensed, they will be removed because of copyright infringement.

It’s equally important to keep along with other Wikipedia sites like Wikinews, as they are interlinked and are highly visible and greatly followed. Wikipedia might not directly sell your products but it will surely give it the right exposure if your company and brand is rightly publicized on the right platform that is Wikipedia.
